Performance Simulation of Solar Trough Concentrators: Optical and Thermal Comparisons

The solar trough concentrator is used to increase the radiation intensity on absorbers for water heating, desalination, or power generation purposes. In this study, optical performances of four concentrators, viz. parabolic (PTC), compound (CPC), surface uniform (SUC), and trapezoid (TTC), are simulated using Monte Carlo Ray Tracing method. Mathematical models concentrators first established. distributions their receivers then simulated. heating finally compared. results show that, as a high-concentration ratio concentrator, PTC can achieve highest heat flux, but suffers from worst uniformity absorber, which only 0.32%. CPC generate flux among rest three low-concentration concentrators. Compared with CPC, TTC has better uniformity, its light-receiving 70%. SUC beneficial 87.38%. Thermal analysis that temperatures inside directly proportional wall temperature, temperature rise in smallest TTC. concentrators’ thermal deformations positively correlated temperatures. radial deformation much larger than those other equivalent stress found SUC, long-term operation system.
